Jaisalmer, also known as the Golden City is located in the heart of the Thar Desert and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Rajasthan. With Rajasthan holiday packages becoming highly sought-after, here are a few attractions in Jaisalmer:

➡   Jaisalmer Fort: This fort was built by Rajput king Rao Jaisal in the 12th century. The fort is built out of yellow sandstone and looms over the city of Jaisalmer as it has been built on top of the Trikuta Hill. It is one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture of the era and contains multiple havelis, gateways, and temples inside the main complex. The yellow sandstone gives a honey-gold colour at sunset every day and this has led to the name “Sonar Quila” or Golden Fort.

➡   Camel Safari: When you are in Jaisalmer, going on a camel safari is something you must do. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a journey through the sand dunes on a saddled camel-back is an adventure unlike any. There are local guides who can guide travellers through the most remote parts in the middle of the desert and if you want, you can even spend a night there under the stars. You can also explore the lifestyle of the locals who live in the arid region with very little water.

➡   Gadi Sagar Lake: This Lake was built in the 14th century as a water conservation tank but now has become a popular tourist attraction. The lake is surrounded by beautiful temples and the Krishna Temple on the Tilon Gate deserves a special mention for its architecture. If you love bird-watching, make sure you visit the lake during winter when it attracts migratory birds from the north. The lake is filled with tourists during the Ganguar festival which is celebrated in March or April.

➡   Sam Sand Dunes: The Sam Sand Dunes is one of the most well-known and iconic tourist attractions of Rajasthan. The ambiance of the location is unmatched as sweeping sand dunes are all the eyes see in every direction. The earthy music supplemented by the Rajasthani folk dance give a rustic feel and highlight the gypsy culture prevalent in these parts. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival, which is held every year in February, is a great chance to explore the Sam Sand Dunes.

➡   Salim Singh Ki Haveli: This fort is truly a one of a kind structure and features architecture which was unusual for its time. The structure has a roof that seems to be wider than its base and the arched structure is meant to resemble the tail of a peacock. There are 38 different balconies on the roof with each balcony being uniquely crafted with splendid designs. There are no forts in Jaisalmer which can be said to be resembling the Salim Singh ki Haveli.

➡   Kuldhara Village: This was an ordinary village located on the outskirts on Jaisalmer that had been inhabited since the 13th century. However, the entire village along with 84 other surrounding ones was deserted overnight in the early 19th century. Since then, attempts to resettle in the region have proved futile due to complaints of paranormal activity. The area is now being promoted as a ghost town and regularly attracts tourists.
